Anglo-Saxon Invasion

Roman Occupation
Julius Caesar, along with Roman conquerors arrived and remained in Britain for more than four hundred years. They built the Hadrian's Wall, a seventy-three-mile-long wall that helped keep invaders out of the country for several centuries. When Julius Caesar and the conquerors left Britain, it was left vulnerable for invasions.
In the fifth century, the Anglo-Saxons pushed the Britons to the edge of the country and forcefully converted their language and culture into the Anglo-Saxon way. The Anglo-Saxons greatly encouraged the scops, who are the storytellers, community preservationists, and poetic song writers. Later, the Anglo-Saxons were united by the authority of King Alfred the Great of Wessex.
William the Conqueror crossed the English Channel i 1066 and defeated the Anglo-Saxon armies at the Battle of Hastings. Thus was ended the dominance of Anglo Saxon culture in the island kingdom.
Although Christianity was first introduced in Gritain during the Roman occupation, it was not a dominant religion until centuries later. The Christian beliefs were spread by Christian monks from Ireland and missionaires from Rome and other parts of the continent. The British pagan religions were replaced by Christianity by the late seventh century.
